A notable example of our expertise assessing hydrology, site stabilization and surface water management is our work with Lutsen Mountains. Lutsen Mountains is located along the Poplar River and Lake Superior’s North Shore. During 2003 – 1005, SE Group conducted exhaustive inventories and watershed analysis to assess the State’s listing of the Poplar on the 303(d) list for turbidity – the state was looking at the ski area as a primary cause. Our analysis identified restoration opportunities and stormwater management projects that would dramatically reduce sediment delivery to the Poplar from the ski area facilities. The analysis also identified many natural slumps along the Poplar and these slumps were found to be the primary cause of turbidity in the river. Lastly, the analysis identified development opportunities and constraints for resort development in the future. Among dozens of projects that were identified, the largest of these projects was the Brule Tightline, constructed in 2003, a 4‐foot diameter tightline to convey surface flows that had eroded thousands of tons of sediment into the Poplar over the previous decades. In 2006 Cook County, MN adopted a new stormwater ordinance that imposed regulatory requirements for large and small‐site construction projects. In 2007 and 2008, SE Group prepared a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) in support of development permitting under the new ordinance. In the summer of 2008, Lutsen installed a new double chair on Eagle Mountain. SE Group assisted with the stormwater control for this project, which included a redesign of the intake structure for the Brule Tightline that Lutsen had constructed in 2003. During the severe weather that caused flooding throughout the upper Midwest in May‐June 2008, Lutsen Mountains experienced a 100+ year precipitation event in which 7 inches of rain fell in less than 3 hours. The Brule tightline safely conveyed the flows associated with this event, resulting in substantially reduced erosion along the Brule ski trail compared to previous years.
